Drospirenone:

Drospirenone, also known under the brand name Slynd, or in combination with oestrogen where it is commonly sold under the name Yasmin, is a progestin medication which is used in birth control pills. These pharmaceutical products are prescribed to prevent pregnancy and are also used in menopausal hormone therapy, along with the treatment of a few other indications.
Drospirenone is known as a fourth-generation progestin, with the original patent being granted to the drugs manufacturing company Schering AG in 1976 and subsequently emerged onto the medical marketplace in 2000. With drospirenone manufacturers and drospirenone suppliers being granted additional patents including WIPO and US in 1998 and 2000, respectively. More recently, the medication was approved for use in menopausal hormone therapy in combination with estradiol in 2005 and was introduced for use as a progestogen-only birth control pill in 2019.
Currently, due to the expiration of patents and its wide regulatory approval, drospirenone has become cost-effective for distributors to list for sale and wholesale on the global marketplace. As such, drospirenone, especially in combination with ethinylestradiol, has become widely available for order at a variety of price points and quantities.

Method of action of drospirenone:

Drospirenone functions through its antiandrogen effects, improving acne and hirsutism, while also inhibiting the maturation of follicles and ovulation, preventing pregnancy. It is an analogue of the diuretic spironolactone, which involves anti-mineralocorticoid activity, inhibiting aldosterone receptors, which increases sodium and water excretion. In essence, drospirenone suppresses the release of both the follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone, preventing ovulation, while also inducing other changes which may aid in pregnancy prevention. Such as alterations in cervical mucus consistency, hindering sperm movement, and lowering the chance of embryo implantation.

Form and dosage of drospirenone:

As with other drugs, the final form and packaging are dependent on the manufacturers and suppliers, as well as the specific distributor and order. However, drospirenone is predominantly listed for sale as a combination medication along with ethinylestradiol. It comes in forms including tablets and film-coated tablets which are taken orally, with or without food. Typically for use in pregnancy prevention and menstruation regulation, it is recommended that the medication be taken once daily during the 21-day cycle, followed by 7 days abstinence. For the use in the treatment of other indications, drospirenone regimes tend to be bespoke to the needs of the specific patient, as such, the prescribing medical official’s and manufacturers’ instructions should be adhered to.
