Aciclovir:

Also known as acyclovir, it is an antiviral drug first manufactured in the 1970s and subsequently approved for use in the medical field in the 1980s for the treatment of most infections caused by the herpesvirus family. This was followed by the closely related prodrug form, valaciclovir, which came into medicinal use in 1995, being transformed in the body to aciclovir after absorption. In 2009 the combination of aciclovir with hydrocortisone cream, marketed as Xerese, was approved for medicinal use in the United States for the treatment of herpes labialis (cold sores). Currently, aciclovir is on the World Health Organization’s List of Essential Medicines, indicating its central role as a safe and cost efficient medication in health systems across the globe. Although initially patented, it has since expired and thus it is for sale under numerous names, including Cymex Ultra, Zovirax and Virasorb. Where it is primarily used in the treatment of herpes, chickenpox, and shingles infections. Additionally, it is also known to be effective for the prevention of both transplant induced cytomegalovirus infections and those caused by the Epstein-Barr virus.

Method of action

Aciclovir belongs to the pharmacotherapeutic group of drugs consisting of direct acting antiviral nucleosides and nucleotides excl. Functioning in the inhibition of reverse transcriptase, a vital process in which infections such as the herpes simplex virus rely upon to reverse transcribe their RNA into DNA, facilitating replications and subsequent disease spread.

Form and dosage

The intake method is dependent on the aciclovir manufacturer’s and aciclovir supplier’s chosen packaging, with availability being common in tablet, liquid, and cream forms. Capable of being taken orally as a suspension solution or a capsule, as well as topically as an ointment. Specific dosages for tablet and liquid forms are illness dependent, however they typically vary between 200mg and 800mg, with lower values for children. These are taken 2 to 5 times a day, with or without food, and it is advised to stay well hydrated as kidneys are taxed by the medication. The use of creams is similar, with 5 applications of a thin layer applied each day.
