What does it do?
Atovaquone is an antibiotic prescribed to treat and prevent pneumocystis pneumonia,
toxoplasmosis, PCP and malaria. It is also given to patients with allergic to Sulfa based drugs
and when other therapies have been ineffective. However, it is as effective as more
commonly prescribed drugs and known for a few side effects. Its special application is
amongst patients whose immune system is weak or already compromised or patients
suffering from HIV/AIDS infection. It is for this reason, that this drug is expensive. Normally,
once the body has gained enough cell count, the administration of this medicine can be
stopped.
Atovaquone is most commonly sold under the brand name Mepron and Melrose.
Atovaquone was approved for use in 2000 in combination with Proguanil in the USA. It has
been made available as generic mediation since 2011. It is used to make medicines to treat
a wider range of infection when combined with other drugs.
Dosage
Atovaquone’s suspension (liquid) is taken by mouth, When treating pneumonia, the normal
dosage is twice a day for 21 days and when preventing pneumonia, only once with a meal
once a day. A standard dosage used to treat malaria is 100 mg of Proguanil hydrochloride
with 250 mg of Atovaquone. A pediatric tablet has 25 mg of PH and 62.5 mg of Atovaquone.
How does it work?
Parasites enter our body through many routes; one of the most common ones is a mosquito
bite, leading to malaria. Atovaquone and its associate drugs work by interfering with the
growth of the parasite in the red blood cells of the human body. As the body recovers and
gains back it desired red blood cell count, the patient can stop using this medicine, as
directed by the physician. In the treatment of lung Infections, it is used to stop infection
symptoms like fever, cough, and shortness of breath. In the case of lungs, it stops the
serious infection causing fungus amongst HIV patients, in all cases; it is giving the body
enough blood cells to fight.
