Bisacodyl

Bisacodyl is an organic compound. It is used as a stimulant laxative drug. Its action directly shows the effect on the colon producing a bowel movement. Those suffering from episodic and chronic constipation and those who need management of neurogenic bowel dysfunction are typically prescribed Bisacodyl. It is also used as a part of bowel preparation for medical examinations like colonoscopies. Bisacodyl is sold under the trade names Dulcolax Muxol, Fleet, Nourilax, Alophen among others. Schmidt reported Bisacodyl as a new synthetic laxative in 1953. Lilly Industries Ltd files for the patent in 1974 and it has been in use since then. However, with the expiry of the patent protection, it is now widely made and sold around the world by companies like Procter and sample. The current assignee of the patent license is Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research.

Dosage and administration

Bisacodyl is available as 5 mg tablets, 10 mg suppositories, 5 mg Pediatric suppositories, as a 1.25 US fluid ounces (37 ml) pre-packaged enema that has a 10 mg delivered dose of liquid Bisacodyl. When using the Oral tABLET, the prescribed dose is between 5 to 15 mg, once a day as needed and the therapy lasts for Up to 1 week. When talking through the Rectal, route, as ENEMA, the dose is 10 mg, inserted rectally, as directed, once a day and if using the SUPPOSITORY, 1 suppository with 10 mg of the drug is inserted rectally, once a day.

The price of Bisacodyl

In the USA, the consumer pays an average retail price of $2.88 for a supply of 4 tablets of 5mg strength of a generic brand. This price is also lower in Asia and other parts of the world, for example in India, a box of 10 capsules, for adults, costs only USD0.15, and the children 5mg suppository costs around USD 0.65.

How does it work?

Bisacodyl actions in the bowel stimulate enteric neurons. This causes peristalsis, i.e., colonic contractions. It is also a contact laxative that helps the body retain more fluid and salt. Bisacodyl has little effect on the small intestine, however, stimulant laxatives promote evacuation of the colon.
