Cefaclor Monohydrate is a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat certain bacterial infections such as pneumonia and infections of the ear, throat, lung, skin, and urinary tract. Cefaclor Monohydrate is from a family of antibiotics called cephalosporins. They are broad-spectrum antibiotics used for the treatment of septicaemia, meningitis, biliary tract infections, pneumonia, peritonitis, and urinary tract infections. The makeup of the cephalosporins is similar to that of the Penicillins. Cefaclor Monohydrate is effective against many types of bacteria, including both Gram-negative and Gram-positive organisms. Being particularly effective against Haemophilus influenzae, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus pyogenes derived infections. Cefaclor Monohydrate is marketed under the popular brand name of Ceclor among others, with Eli Lily Italy being the main manufacturer and patent owner of Cefaclor. Cefaclor got patented in 1973 and approved for medical use in 1979.

In the treatment of Uncomplicated Skin and Skin Structure Infections, the recommended dosage is 250-500 mg every 8 hours or an Extended-release tablet of 375 mg taken every 12 for 7-10 days. In the treatment of Urinary Tract Infections and Bronchitis the dosage in extended-release tablet form is 250 mg every 8 hours. And for the treatment of Pharyngitis and Tonsillitis, patients are prescribed capsules of 250-500 mg, to be taken every 8 hours or extended-release tablets of 750 mg given every 12 hours for 10 days.
