Chondroitin sulfate

Chondroitin sulfate is a chemical that the body naturally produces and is normally found in the cartilage around joints in the body. For, industrial and medicinal formulations, it is extracted from animal sources, such as shark and cow cartilage. A synthetic version of this can also be made in a lab. Chondroitin sulfate is commonly prescribed in the treatment of osteoarthritis and cataracts. Chondroitin sulfate is also used in combination with other ingredients, including manganese ascorbate, hyaluronic acid, collagen peptides, or glucosamine. Chondroitin sulfate is attaches itself to proteins as part of a proteoglycan, as a chondroitin chain can have over 100 independent sugars. It is also an important structural component of cartilage as it provides its resistance to compression. Chondroitin sulfate is sold under the brand name OptiFlex-C amongst others. George Petito was the inventor of Chondroitin sulfate and filed for a patent in 1998, which was granted a year later in 1999, but the patent expired in 2018. With this, now several manufacturers and distributors are manufacturing the formulation as generic version around the world.

Forms and Dose

Chondroitin sulfate is administered orally and applied to the skin, and given as a shot for several other conditions. In the treatment of osteoarthritis, the typical dose is 800-2000 mg taken as a single dose or in two or three divided doses daily for up to 3 years. And when being applied to the Skin for osteoarthritis, a cream containing 50 mg per gram of chondroitin sulfate, 30 mg per gram of glucosamine sulfate, 140 mg per gram, and 32 mg per gram of camphor was prescribed for sore joints for up to 8 weeks. It is injected into the muscle for into the muscle daily or twice weekly for 6 months. It is also inserted into the bladder when treating urinary tract infections and the dose prescribed is 50 mL of chondroitin sulfate and hyaluronic acid, which is inserted into the bladder once weekly for a period of 4 weeks, and then once or twice a month for up to 5 months. When used for eye cataracts, there are several drops with sodium hyaluronate and chondroitin sulfate have been used during cataract surgery.

The price of Chondroitin sulfate

China manufactures 85% of the global supply, while the total input cost for 99.5 percent purity was between USD 20/kg and USD 25/kg in China, it was far more expensive in other parts of the world.

How does Chondroitin sulfate work?

In osteoarthritis, the cartilage in the joints breaks down. Chondroitin sulfate is one of the building blocks of cartilage and can slowdown its breakdown.
