Dimetindene gives relief from symptoms of allergic reactions like Urticaria, upper respiratory tract allergies like hay fever, perennial rhinitis, food and drug allergies, pruritus of various origins, except pruritus caused by cholestasis and insect bites. Dimethindene is also indicated for pruritus in eruptive skin diseases such as chickenpox. Dimethindene is an adjuvant in eczema treatment and other allergic pruriginous dermatoses. Dimetindene is an antihistamine or anticholinergic, which is a first-generation selective H1 antagonist. Dimetindene is atypical of first-generation H1 antagonists because a minimal amount of this medicine passes across the blood-brain barrier. It also acts as an M2 receptor antagonist. Dimetindene is sold in its most common forms, maleic acid salt and Dimethindene maleate. Dimethindene is sold under the brand name Fenistil among others. Merck & Co Inc first patented Dimetindene in, 1958 for its Mastitis aerosol foam. It came in to medical use in 1960. Dimethindene is sold as a tablet, topical as 0.1% gel, or lotion. If using drops through the oral route for itching from urticaria, dermatitis, eczema, diabetes, liver disease, leukemia, lymphogranulomatosis, insect bites, allergies, hay fever, the adult dose is 1 to 2 milligrams or 20 to 40 drops of a 1-milligram or milliliter solution, taken three times a day. When using the immediate-release tablet, the dose is 1 to 2 milligrams, three times a day. If using the sustained-release tablet, the dose is 2.5 milligrams, taken twice a day. If using syrup, the dose is one teaspoonful or 5 milliliters of a 0.123-milligram syrup, taken up to 9 times a day. If administering through the parenteral route, the dose is 4 milligrams, administered intravenously, once or twice a day for during of therapy no longer than 7 days.
