What is Filgrastim?

Filgrastim is used to treat low neutrophil count in patients with HIV/AIDS, following chemotherapy or radiation poisoning, or an idiopathic cause. This drug stimulates the production of a type of white blood cell called granulocytes in patients undergoing treatment or therapy causing their low white blood cell counts to drop. Lowering of these white blood cells leads to infections and other complications in patients undergoing chemotherapy. It helps by preventing infection and fevers due to low blood cells caused by chemotherapy. It is a laboratory version of a naturally occurring substance, which makes our bodies produce more white blood cells. That is why; it is given to anyone with low white blood cell counts, especially those going treatment for cancer. This pharmaceutical substance is also used in treatment procedures like bone marrow or stem cell transplants. Filgrastim is sold as Neupogen®, Granix® amongst other brand names. Amgen patented it and got its approval to sell medically from 1991 in the USA. In the years between its first discovery in 1998 and the present, it got approved to treat various indications. It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines. This product is available in the following dosage forms and is sold as injectable solution, single-dose vials. Different brands are made with different strengths. Filgrastim is given as a subcutaneous injection or infused into a vein. Following Bone Marrow Transplantation (BMT) the Initial dose is 10 mcg/kg via short IV infusion (over 15 to 30 minutes) OR continuous IV infusion for a Duration of therapy of up to 24 hours. In the treatment of Peripheral Progenitor Cell Transplantation, the standard adult dose is 10 mcg/kg via subcutaneous injection once a day and in the treatment of Neutropenia or Congenital Neutropenia the initial adult dose starts at 3 mcg/kg via subcutaneous injection 2 times a day. Redness, swelling, itching, or bruising at the injection site; easy bleeding/bruising, pink/bloody urine, bloody vomit, coughing up blood, quick heartbeat, fever, purple or red blotches on your skin, back discomfort, are some of the common side effects related to this pharmaceutical medicine. In very rare cases, this pharmaceutical medicine may raise the risk of developing a particular bone marrow condition (myelodysplastic syndrome-MDS) or blood cancer (acute myeloid leukemia-AML) in persons with congenital neutropenia or people receiving chemotherapy/radiation.

The Wholesale Price of Filgrastim

The average retail price of Filgrastim is USD 500 approximately. This price has been further cut down with introduction of new variants by Pfizer which sells at USD350 for a 480-mcg prefilled syringe.

How does Filgrastim work?

Blood cells are made in the body's bone marrow and the three major types of blood cells are white, which fight infection; red, that supply oxygen. Red blood cells also help to remove waste from organs and tissues. The third is platelets, which makes blood clot. Cancer treatments and radiation therapy can adversely affect these cells, putting the patient at risk of developing infections, anemia, and other complications like bleeding. Colony-stimulating factors stimulate bone marrow more blood cells and promote their healthy functioning. While Filgrastim does not directly affect tumors, but in stimulating blood cells, it can form a support for the immune system during cancer treatment. Simply put, this pharmaceutical drug is a growth factor that stimulates the production, maturation, and activation of neutrophils, white blood cells and thus help fight infections.
