Hyaluronic acid sodium

Hyaluronic acid sodium is used to treat knee pain in patients with osteoarthritis or joint inflammation. It is prescribed in cases where treatment with acetaminophen, exercise, or physical therapy has failed to produce desirable results. Hyaluronic acid could also be used in plastic surgeries to reduce wrinkles or as a filler in other parts of the body. It is also used in ophthalmology surgeries, like in the extraction of cataracts, implantation of intraocular lenses, corneal transplants, glaucoma filtration, and retinal attachment, and the treatment of dry eyes. Hyaluronic acid is also used to treat interstitial cystitis, where it works by coating the lining of the bladder. Hyaluronic acid sodium is sold under the brand name Recosyn, Synvisc, Viscure, and Yardel amongst others. It is sold under several other brand names in other countries. FDA-approved Hyaluronic acid to treat osteoarthritis of the knee. In high molecular weights, HA improved both pain and function in people with knee osteoarthritis. Karl Meyer and John Palmer first obtained it in 1934 from cow's eye. Pharmacia developed the first hyaluronan biomedical product, in the 1970s and 1980s, and approved for use in eye surgery such as corneal transplantation, cataract surgery, glaucoma surgery, and surgery to repair retinal detachments.

The price of Hyaluronic acid sodium

In the global wholesale market, the consumers have to pay USD 300 for the supply of 50 grams of the ingredient version of this medicine. In India, the consumers have to pay USD 250 for a 20ml injection and the cost of this medicine is higher still in the developed world.

How does it work?

Hyaluronic acid work just like a substance that occurs naturally in our joints. Its action serves as a lubricant and shock absorber in the joint. It helps the knee in moving smoothly, thereby lessening pain. It does this by modulating interactions between adjacent tissues. It is a vital polysaccharide distributed extensively in the extracellular matrix of connective tissue. As it is highly viscous, it can protect ocular tissues and cell layers. The elasticity of the solutions aids in the absorption of mechanical stress and creates a protective buffer for the tissues. When used in wound healing, it protects the vehicle that transports peptide growth factors and other structural proteins to the site of action. Once it has transported key molecules, it degrades and transports proteins to promote tissue repair.
