What is Pantoprazole?
Pantoprazole is a pharmaceutical drug commonly sold under the brand name “Protonix” and classified as a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It has an effective mechanism of action and is well known for treating gastrointestinal disorders, mainly peptic ulcers, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and interim treatment of Esophagitis when acid leakage is suspected in the esophageal lining. Pantoprazole acts as an antacid and tends to rectify the pH level in the stomach which drops due to excessive gastric acid secretion. It restores the cell damage caused by the secretion of excessive acid and helps to reduce the risk of gastrointestinal ulcers and cancers in the future.
Pantoprazole is less likely to create complications on interaction with other drugs. However, a slight difference may occur in the function of the drug when it is administered with Erlotinib, Nelfinavir and Rilpivirine .
This pharmaceutical substance is prescribed according to the symptoms like acidity, heartburn, difficulty in swallowing, feeling a lump in the throat, or suspected ulcer. It is used on a large scale as it has been reported to be one of the less harmful PPIs with maximum efficacy.
In addition to its active ingredient, it has some inactive ingredients as well, namely calcium stearate, crospovidone, hypromellose, iron oxide, mannitol, methacrylic acid copolymer, polysorbate 80, povidone, propylene glycol, sodium carbonate, sodium lauryl sulfate, titanium dioxide, and triethyl citrate.
