What is the Vasopressin drug?

Vasopressin is a nine amino acid peptide antidiuretic hormone. Vasopressin regulates the tonicity of body fluids; it means it acts on the kidneys and blood vessels to help prevent loss of water from the body. Vasopressin reduces urine output and helps the kidneys reabsorb water into the body. Vasopressin medicine is used to treat diabetes insipidus caused by a lack of naturally occurring pituitary hormone, which raises blood pressure for adults in shock. Vasopressin can also be used to treat or prevent certain conditions of the stomach after surgery or during abdominal x-rays. Vasopressin was elucidated and synthesized by Vincent du Vigneaud, an American biochemist.
