Mesna

Mesna reduces the risk of hemorrhagic cystitis, a condition in which bladder inflammation results in serious bleeding in people who receive ifosfamide, a form of chemotherapy. The human body breaks down ifosfamide to form which harms the bladder. Mesna is sold under the brand name Mesna and Mexna among others. Asta Medica AG was given the first patent in 1988 and approved for sales in the United States in 1988. Mesna features on the WHO's List of Essential Medicines.

How does Mesna work?

After injection, Mesna concentrates forms in the bladder. Acrolein accumulates in the bladder after administration of chemotherapy and through a Michael addition. This forms a conjugate with acrolein and other urotoxic metabolites inactivating the urotoxic compounds to harmless metabolites. As a result of these actions, the patient's bladder is relaxed and relief is provided.
