Nintedanib Esylate is sold under the brand name “Ofev”. It belongs to the drug class of pulmonary and tyrosine kinase inhibitors. Offered by prescription, this pharmaceutical medicine is used to treat: lung disease known as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), lung fibrosis in people with a chronic (long-lasting) interstitial respiratory disease (progress), and for SSc-ILD patients, to slow the rate of decline in lung function (also known as scleroderma-associated ILD). The safety and efficacy of this pharmaceutical medicine in children are unknown. Be sure to test all patients for liver function as well as females with the potential to conceive, before starting treatment with this drug. The recommended dosage is 150 mg taken twice daily about 12 hours apart. These capsules should be taken with food and swallowed whole with liquid. The pharmacokinetics of this pharmaceutical medicine is not known to be affected by chewing or crushing the capsule. Some of the side effects associated with this drug are abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, decreased appetite, and weight loss. Nausea and vomiting can be persistent or severe in some people. This pharmaceutical substance can cause fetal harm when administered to pregnant women according to animal studies and its mechanism of action therefore it is important to counsel patients on pregnancy prevention and planning. Females of reproductive potential should have their pregnancies checked before and during treatment if necessary. Nintedanib Esylate’s presence in human milk, its effects on breastfed infants, or its effects on milk production are unknown. For reasons of safety, a decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or discontinue the drug, considering how important the drug is to the mother before making the decision.
