Sodium Phosphate Manufacturer

Sodium Phosphate is sold under the brand name “OsmoPrep” and belongs to a class of drugs called saline laxatives. It is used in adults greater than 18 years of age to empty the colon (colon, intestine) prior to colonoscopy so that the doctors can see the colon wall clearly. It works by causing diarrhea, allowing the stools to leave the colon. Sodium Phosphate is available as an oral tablet. It is usually taken as one dose in the evening before a scheduled colonoscopy and one dose the next morning (3-5 hours before surgery). For each dose, the doctor will prescribe to mix the dose with 240 ml of liquid and drink the resulting solution. Since your stools can be very large/watery, drink plenty of clear fluids to avoid losing too much water (dehydration). Do not use this medication in children under 5 years of age without a doctor's recommendation. Some products which will interact with this pharmaceutical medicine include other drugs which will affect the kidneys (for example, ACE inhibitors like lisinopril, ARBs like valsartan, diuretics/water pills like furosemide/hydrochlorothiazide, NSAIDs like ibuprofen/naproxen). The watery bowel movements from this drug may cause your body to soak up less of your regular medicines and obtain less benefit from them. This pharmaceutical medicine can cause some side effects that include abdominal pain, nausea, irregular heartbeat, seizures, rash, burning or tingling of the lips, tongue, or mouth, throat tightness, and difficulty breathing or swallowing. The FDA has categorized this drug under pregnancy category C. The drug should only be used if the benefits outweigh the risks. There are no studies regarding its secretion in breast milk.

How does Sodium Phosphate work?

This drug generally works by increasing the fluid in the small intestines, causing diarrhea. This results in the emptying of the colon. It usually leads to bowel movements within 30 minutes to 6 hours.

The cost of Sodium Phosphate

The injectable solution (3 mmol/mL) of Sodium Phosphate costs around $326 for a stock of 375 milliliters, depending upon the drug store you visit.
